LED face masks are the beauty world's latest obsession. Designed to reduce signs of ageing and improve the firmness of your skin from using it for just 10 minutes three to five times a week, it's hard not to be intrigued. While the device was initially mostly used by A-list celebrities (Victoria Beckham has been a fan for years), as well as professional facialists. The high-tech beauty gadget has now become available to the masses to use at home.

They are, however, not cheap. Prices mostly range from around £150 to a whopping £1,400, with one of the most coveted options on the market being the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask.

Not only are Kim Kardashion, Lily Collins, Halle Berry, Lisa Snowden and Kate Hudson all fans of the mask, but it's also one of the most highly-rated options out there, racking up over 1,000 five-star reviews from men and women around the world who have incorporated the celebrity-endorsed mask into their skincare routine.

Costing £299, it's pricey, so I put it to the test to see if it's worth splurging on - here's my totally honest verdict.

How LED light therapy works

Using different wavelengths of light, LED masks are a non-invasive way of rejuvenating tired skin and reducing signs of ageing by helping to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.

But what actually is collagen, and why is it so key? Collagen is a type of protein found in the skin’s connective tissue and is crucial for skins elasticity and strength.

Sadly, our body loses its ability to produce collagen as we age. From the age of 20, we lose around one percent of this vital protein each year. Hence the older you get, the more your skin loses its elasticity.

The mask is designed to be attached to your face, held on with ear loops and velcro straps, and on the inside, there are tiny bulbs which emit different wavelengths of LED-coloured light.

CurrentBody's mask uses only clinically proven wavelengths to reach up to 4cm of skin tissue, helping to stimulate the cells from within to deliver the same clinical results as professional salon machines.

It offers two types of LED, red and near-infrared light. Both help to stimulate collagen (AKA restore plumpness to your skin) and reduce inflammation. It also improves your skin’s overall texture and firmness over time, making light therapy masks popular for tackling anti-aging issues and general maintenance. Red and near-infrared light are the two most commonly used types of LED in clinic settings too.

💸 Reasons to buy

For starters, CurrentBody’s mask is packed with a whopping 132 LED bulbs, which CurrentBody claims to be “at least 31% more powerful and effective than any other at home red and near-infrared LED mask on the market”.

It also features CurrentBody’s patented Pillow Technology, which unlike other LED devices, provides greater light distribution, meaning it provides even coverage of the skin’s surface, leaving no gaps. This means that your skin cells will absorb the maximum amount of light energy for more effective results.

Like most LED masks, it comes with a velcro strap, handheld charger, storage bag and a charging cable.

It stays securely in place and can reach every inch of skin – it even comes with safety goggles to prevent the bright bulb lights getting in your eyes. While I can't get up and move around with it on, it's ideal if you need a 10-minute break a couple times a week. Best of all, I definitely felt my skin looked brighter and more radiant after using it for just two weeks.

Not to mention, this one is incredibly easy to use – all you need to do is strap in, select which colour to use and relax. I like to watch TV while I wait.

After using it two to three times a week over the space of a month, I found my skin looked brighter, any hormonal acne on my chin area healed faster and the mild rosacea on my cheeks were calmer, less irritated and my overall complexion was calmer.

I have found in-clinic chemical peels to be a very effective-treatment for my acne but in the five days after a treatment, the side effect is that your skin will be very dry, flaky and sometimes sore. I've seen the biggest difference when using this LED mask after a peel to speed-up recovery, as it makes my face feel less inflamed.

One of the major benefits, in my eyes, is that an at-home LED mask is much cheaper than undergoing LED treatments in a clinic, so if you're looking to up your skincare routine without spending hundreds if not thousands at clinics, an LED mask is a far more economical solution.

Best of all, there are no side effects after each treatment, your skin will look and behave normally.

Reasons to avoid

Let's be frank, an LED light mask is not an essential skincare product, and you can have an effective routine using affordable topical products.

The CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask is £299, an eye-wateringly high price tag that may be nothing to wealthy celebrities, but for everyone else, it's undoubtedly expensive.

That said, if light therapy is something you're looking to incorporate into your skincare routine, out of all the LED masks I've tried (I've tested eight in total), the CurrentBody option is definitely the one I would most recommend.

💰 Best deal we've found

The retailer CurrentBody has reduced the price of many of its LED mask that are in limited edition bundles.

The best deal we've seen so far is a CurrentBody Skin LED Mask & Neck Kit, which gets you to LED mask (usually £299) and neck mask (usually £269) that has been reduced from £568 to £482.

There's also a bundle for £359 that includes the face mask and a CurrentBody Skin Green Tea Seum that is rich in organic green tea, vitamin C, quinoa peptides and triple hyaluronic acid to keep your skin in tip top condition between your LED treatments.

This CurrentBody LED face and neck mask kit is currently on offer with a 15% discount.

What's a good affordable option?

I also tested out the Sensse Professional LED Light Therapy Face Mask, which is a great entry level to LED if you've never incorporated it in your routine. It's designed with 90 bulbs in total, and provides four LED wavelengths; red, yellow, purple and blue. It's recommend for use every three days, with five-minute treatments, and you can flick through the different options using the rechargeable handheld remote.

A great option if fine lines are your concern, this mask doesn't feel restrictive when worn, and within two weeks I began to see an improvement in the fine lines around our eyes.
