One Direction fans were sent into meltdown after Harry Styles broke a lengthy Twitter silence to post a cryptic one word tweet.

The singer, who has not tweeted since May, yesterday took to the site to say, simply, “Do”.

Some fans took the tweet to mean Styles has new music on the way. One said: “omg ur posting ur single’s title in words aren’t u.”

One mused : “Imagine the title of his new single being ‘Do’.”

Another said: "Is this new? One lyric word every day? We will have the whole song in a year!!! Yey!!,"

One fan commented: “He'll break the Internet just by tweeting "do"“

Others accused the 25-year-old of leading fans on with someone calling him a: "f***ing tease," and another saying: "harry you cant just tweet one word and then leave why are you such a tease."

The tweet, despite containing just two characters, has so far received nearly 75,000 comments, been retweeted 184,000 times, and has more than half a million likes.

After One Direction announced a hiatus in 2016, Styles released his self-titled debut album in 2017. It quickly went to number one around the world.

Not bad for a lad from Cheshire.

There is a possibility the cryptic tweet does have something to do with new music, as it is no secret he has been recording a new album.

He recently told Rolling Stone magazine he bit his tongue during recording after taking magic mushrooms. He said: “We were doing mushrooms and I bit off the tip of my tongue. So I was trying to sing with all this blood gushing out of my mouth.”
