‘The Crown’ Reportedly Reached Out to Buckingham Palace to Fact-Check the Show (& They Said No)
It’s no secret that the British royal family has absolutely nothing to do with the popular Netflix show, The Crown (ya know, besides it being about them). But as it turns out, the series creator actually reached out to the family and asked them to fact check the drama—and they said no.
On a recent episode of The Heirpod podcast, royal correspondent and biographer Omid Scobie revealed that Queen Elizabeth and her royal clan immediately declined the offer.
"I always wondered why there wasn't more collaboration between the two," Scobie said, according to The Sun. "Those working on the show did reach out the palace to see if there was an opportunity for fact-checking, but the answer was a firm no. But, now we've reached these key years, I wonder if any royals are kicking themselves for not taking advantage of that opportunity because this narrative is being shaped for many around the world."
Considering those close to the royals have shared that the family members are not fans of the hit show or how it depicts their lives, the news comes as a bit of a shock. Scobie also stated that The Crown (which just released its fourth season) is one of the main ways people around the world learn about the British monarchy.
He added, "They expect 25 million households to view this new season within its first four weeks. That's 25 million people who will have their opinion of the Royal Family shaped by this."
"I wonder, going forward if they start moving into the modern era of the royals if they will decide to become more involved," ABC correspondent Maggie Rulli also said during the podcast. "But, I don't know, it does seem to go against everything the Royal Family stands for, especially the Queen. I can't imagine them actually working with Netflix like this.”
