Cowboys get some help for their passing game, sign WR Allen Hurns
The Dallas Cowboys have failed to properly address the receiver position around Dez Bryant for a few years now, but maybe Allen Hurns can help.
Hurns will sign a two-year deal with the Cowboys, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Hurns was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who made the curious move to prioritize former Colts receiver Donte Moncrief on a one-year guaranteed $9.6 million deal, making Hurns a late addition to a thin receiver pool in free agency.

The Cowboys haven’t had a game-breaking No. 2 receiver in a while. Terrance Williams has been solid, but hasn’t had more than 840 yards in his five NFL seasons. The lack of options in the passing game is becoming a bigger issue in Dallas as Bryant has slowed down a bit and tight end Jason Witten nears retirement.
Hurns could be a nice addition, though he’s no sure thing. He had a good rookie season, then broke out with 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2015. The Jaguars gave him a four-year, $40 million deal, but then he had 477 and 484 yards the past two seasons. Some of that can be blamed on injuries, inconsistent quarterback play, and being in a run-first offense last season. But we have seen Hurns’ upside, and he is just 26 years old.
The Cowboys need to be investing in pieces around quarterback Dak Prescott. Hurns is a nice step toward that.
