COVID-19 in Leon County: New cases dive 43%, hospitalizations remain steady

New COVID-19 infections in Leon County have plunged 43% when compared to late July totals as hospitalizations remain relatively steady.

Between Aug. 5-11, there were 973 new infections in Leon County and the positivity rate was 21.8%, according to a bi-weekly report from the Florida Department of Health.

In the last week of July, there were 1,779 new infections recorded throughout the county.

43 COVID-positive patients in Tallahassee hospitals

As of Monday morning, Tallahassee's two hospitals had 43 COVID-positive patients, just one more than the total in late July.

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare had 23 COVID inpatients, of whom 18 were considered "incidental," meaning they were being treated primarily for other illnesses or injuries.

HCA Florida Capital Hospital, formerly known as Capital Regional Medical Center, had 20 COVID-positive patients Monday.

CDC keeps its 'high' risk label for Leon County, most of Florida

Leon County remains a "high" risk for COVID-19 transmission, as it has for the last six weeks, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In areas with a high community transmission label, the CDC recommends people wear a "well-fitting mask or respirator" indoors as well as get tested when symptoms appear, according to the CDC's website.

Sixty-four of the Sunshine State's 67 counties were also considered high risk for infection as of Thursday.
