The College of the Sequoias football team dropped its last non-conference game of the year on Sept. 30, falling to Diablo Valley College in overtime 50-43.

The game was back and forth for the entirety of the four quarters of regulation and was brought into overtime by a clutch field goal in the dying last seconds of the game.

Even though the Giants ended up taking the loss, COS had an extremely effective offense led by quarterback Nathan Lamb (Tulare Union) and running back Danny Olivera (Firebaugh).

Lamb completed 16 passes on 24 attempts for a total of 268 yards, four touchdowns, and just one interception. Olivera, for his credit, had 20 carries (the person with the second most was Lamb with six) for 123 yards and averaged 6.2 yards per carry.

Twelve players had over 20 yards of offense, led by Rolando Holmes (Tulare Western) on two receptions for 54 yards, AJ Dixson (SkyView) with three carries for 52 yards, and Anthony Valencia (Mt. Whitney) with three receptions for 45 total yards.

This loss now brings their record to 3-2 as they enter their bye week.

COS will now play at rival Fresno City College on Oct. 15. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

Men’s soccer

The COS men’s soccer team lost a tight match to Fresno 1-0.

“It’s just the game. We did what we thought we needed to do to win, and unfortunately, we couldn’t put it in the back of the net, so we’ll move forward," head coach Renato Bustamante said.

COS hosts Clovis at 3 p.m. on Oct. 7.

Women’s soccer

The COS women’s soccer team split their games last week, winning their first game of the week on Tuesday against West-Hills Lemoore, 4-0, and losing their second game of the week against Clovis 2-0.

In the game against West-Hills, Midfielder Litsy Munoz (Mission Oak) had scored a hat-trick (three goals) in less than 10 minutes of game time, which contributed to the easy 4-0 victory.

COS will now have away game against Porterville on Oct. 7.

Volleyball

COS continues to climb in the state polls, rising to No. 14 in California after a 3-0 sweep against Reedley College.

Outside hitter Mia Gilcrest (Redwood) once again led the team in kills with 16, followed up by opposite hitter Daniela Gonzales (Delano) with 10 kills and Yajaira Gahagan (Tulare Union) with eight.

Gilcrest's dominance in the Central Valley Conference has helped her continue to lead the state in total kills, as well as being third in the state with kills per set, sitting at 5.13.
