There have been a few details left to sort out for Meghan and Harry over their decision to leave their job as Senior Members of the Royal family. They’ve figured out when they’re leaving, how they’re moving forward, and now the last bit of security and who is going to pay for it has been solved. Here are all the details.
The couple has made it clear that they have plans to move to Canada. They’ve been in Vancouver since before Christmas and have been settling into a new place here. While they’ve been in Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been assisting the UK Metropolitan Police with on-the-ground security for Meghan and Harry “intermittently” since they moved in part-time in November 2019.
Since Prince Harry and Megan have moved out of their office at Buckingham Palace and the question over who will pay for their security once they’re officially no longer working members has been sorted. It won’t be the Canadian government.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex choosing to re-locate to Canada on a part-time basis presented our government with a unique and unprecedented set of circumstances,” a spokesperson for the minister said in a statement.
“As the Duke and Duchess are currently recognized as Internationally Protected Persons, Canada has an obligation to provide security assistance on an as-needed basis,” the statement continued. “The assistance will cease in the coming weeks, in keeping with their change in status.”
But, they won’t be on their own for that because the UK is going to continue to support their need for security. Meghan, Harry and their baby Archie will still be protected by taxpayer-funded UK police, even during their stay in Canada.
In a statement, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said that they required “effective security” because of “[Harry’s] public profile by virtue of being born into the royal family, his military service, [Meghan’s] own independent profile, and the shared threat and risk level documented specifically over the last few years.”
And they’re not wrong. They’re some of the most famous people in the world right now, and they have a right to feel safe.
