Police in Hudson, N.Y., are certainly breathing sighs of relief after responding to a citizen’s call of a frozen elderly woman inside a car. It turns out that the woman was actually a life-size mannequin, complete with an oxygen-tank mask.

According to a report from CBS New York, an alarmed citizen happened upon a parked vehicle Friday and saw what seemed to be an older woman in the passenger seat. The realistic mannequin sported skin blemishes and the modest dress of an older person, so it made sense for the citizen to make the call.

After trying to find the owner of the car, police smashed the window and made the fortunate discovery that it wasn’t an actual human being. Later, it was discovered that the owner of the car was a sales representative for a medical equipment manufacturer, and the mannequin was a CPR training dummy. That doesn’t explain why the car owner placed the mannequin upright, wearing a seat belt. (Perhaps a carpool-lane gambit?)

According to the Associated Press, the owner of the car was upset that the police broke his car’s window, thinking that their reaction was a little extreme. But Hudson Police Chief Edward Moore commended the community for stepping up to help what they thought was an actual person and defended the department’s response.
