Last year, the “Skywalker Saga” was concluded, more or less, by the release of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. But, before that film was released, Episode IX was nearly an entirely different beast. Originally, the direct of Episode IX was not J.J. Abrams, but instead, the Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow. But, after the death of Carrie Fisher in 2016, and an apparent behind-the-scenes disagreement over the script co-written by Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, the creative team on Episode IX was replaced, and the rest is history.
But, during the all-virtual Comic-Con at Home events over the weekend, Colin Trevorrow reflected on the brief time he was involved in Star Wars and specifically revealed a one-of-a-kind starfighter he designed with his son. This spaceship would have been seen in the final film, had he remained the director. Speaking to Collider, he pulled the 3-D model of the specific ship, the TIE Marauder, and showed it off to the Comic-Con panel.
“So this is one of the – my son and I designed a ship, I have two ships. One of them is at the theme park at Disneyland. This is the other one, and it only exists in this 3D model. It’s called a TIE Marauder, and for Christmas, the guys painted it for me – I only had this in a 3-D model. Now, this is the only one in the world, and it’s an amazing memory for me when I got to do something that was an incredible experience from start to finish that I was able to make a Star Wars ship with my son.”
Previously, as Trevorrow references, a ship called the First Order Tie Echelon — different from this new TIE Maurader — actually exists at Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Disney World. This is because his version of Episode IX was in pre-production as Galaxy’s Edge was being created, and nobody had any reason to believe it wouldn’t all work out. (For what it’s worth, the full script for Trevorrow’s Episode IX, titled “Duel of the Fates,” leaked in early 2020.)
In any case, and regardless of how you feel about Rise of Skywalker, it’s pretty damn bittersweet to think that a dad like Colin Trevorrow designed a starfighter with his son, specifically for a Star Wars movie, and then that movie never came out. And that spaceship never flew.
“I almost directed a Star Wars movie,” Trevorrow said.”But, when you take on the role of storyteller, you recognize that there are going to be heartbreaks, there are going to be crushing disappointments.”
Trevorrow’s next big film will be Jurassic World 3. The film will reunite most of the original cast from the 1993 film, and as of this writing, will be released in 2021.
