- During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan on Tuesday, Hustlers star Constance Wu revealed that she has yet to see her own movie.
- The actress said that not watching herself on-screen helps her "focus on the present and not be self-critical and think too much, dwell too much on the past."
In an era when our best angles are specially crafted to project the best possible versions of ourselves online, it is a rude awakening to have that mirage shattered upon watching your friend's Instagram Story of you. Admit it; you recognize that familiar, existential horror of asking, Is that what my profile looks like all the time? Does my voice really sound like that?
For actors, that fear is probably far more pervasive. Adam Driver ditched a radio interview when the showrunners made him listen to his own singing on Marriage Story. Megan Fox panics if she sees herself on a monitor. Reese Witherspoon can't watch herself or else she'll "spiral into a state of self-hate." And now, Constance Wu is joining the Actors Who Can't Watch Themselves Act Club.
Appearing on Live with Kelly and Ryan yesterday, Wu revealed she has yet to watch her most recent box office success, Hustlers. "I still haven't seen it," she said. "The last movie I saw of mine was Crazy Rich Asians."
She explained how difficult it is to watch herself on the big screen. "It was watching that movie, after that experience, that I stopped watching anything," she said. "I didn't watch my talk show appearances or Fresh Off the Boat or Hustlers. Just because I thought, you know, I want to focus on the present and not be self-critical and think too much, dwell too much on the past."
The dramedy thriller—which earned Jennifer Lopez multiple nominations during the 2020 awards season—was a hit at the box office, grossing more than $100 million in the United States and more than $52 million internationally.
