No one can appreciate a low maintenance routine like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. As a busy politician, she doesn’t sleep much, and travels from New York to Washington D.C. weekly when congress is in session. During that time, her makeup and skincare hardly leave her carryon, but the 30-year-old somehow still found a way to share them with Vogue before another day on Capitol Hill.

“There is so much criticism and nitpicking about how women and fem people present ourselves. Just being a woman is quite politicized here in Washington,” she said in the Beauty Secrets video. “There’s this really false idea that if you care about makeup, or if your interests are in beauty and fashion, that that’s somehow frivolous. But I actually think these are some of the must substantive decisions that we make, and we make them every morning.”

She starts with a toner.

“This is the one I happen to be using right now,” she said, holding up Estee Lauder’s Micro Essence Skin Activating Treatment Lotion. She simply pours the product into her hand and pats it over her skin.

Then, she applies vitamin C serum and moisturizer.

Because no morning skincare is complete without antioxidants, AOC follows toner with a few drops of vitamin C serum, a notorious skin-brightening ingredient. (Sadly, she didn’t name the brand she uses._ Then, it’s on to moisturizer, for which she applies ACURE’s Radically Rejuvenating Whipped Night Cream, which also contains vitamin C.

She’s serious about sunscreen.

AOC is passionate about a lot of things, and sun protection is one of them. She coats her entire face with the highly praised Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50, which she loves as a “melanated” person because it leaves zero whitecast. “You have to be really generous with sunscreen. Don’t play games!” she laughed. “Don’t forget your ears, don’t forget your eyelids.”

A bold lip leaves her glowing with confidence.

After painting on a base of tinted moisturizer, bronzer, eyeshadow, and the works, the congresswoman goes in with her staple red lip—drumroll please—Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso, which is an “indestructible” formula, in her opinion. “Sometimes the best way to really look put together is a bold lip,” she explained. “Of course, being Latina, this is very much our culture … I will wear a red lip when I want confidence.”

She continued, expressing the importance of self-love, even if it takes the boost of jazzy makeup. “In a society that’s trying to tell you you’re not the right weight, you’re not the right color, you’re not the right whatever it is,” she said. “It’s almost like a mini protest to love yourself.”
