Aaron Rodgers announced his engagement to Shailene Woodley out of nowhere earlier this year. The pair were reported to have been romantically involved since 2020, but it wasn't until February this year that their relationship was confirmed.

Aaron referred to his "fiancée" during his acceptance speech at the NFL Honors ceremony, confirming that he was engaged, but keeping the name of his fiancèe under wraps.

He said "2020 was definitely a crazy year, filled with lots of change, growth, some amazing memorable moments, 180 straight days of having my nose hairs scraped, playing for very little fans. I got engaged and I played some of the best football of my career."

Speculation continued until Shailene confirmed she was engaged to Aaron later that month when she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Sitting down for a candid chat with Jimmy, Shailene opened up and confirmed the rumours.

"Yes, we are engaged," she revealed, "but for us, it's not new news, you know? So it's kind of funny. Everybody right now is freaking out over it and we're like, 'Yeah, we've been engaged for a while.'"

But hold up – how did this all come about? And how on earth did we miss the signs? Let's take a look back to very beginning. Okay? Okay.

April 2020

Sitting down with Bustle, Shailene opened up about her relationship breakdown from rugby player Ben Volavola. She explained how they were "very much on the road to marriage and children" revealing how she wasn't able to fully commit to Ben, "I couldn't be available to him in the way that I wanted to be. I didn’t fully love myself.".

July 2020

It was in July of last year that rumours of Shailene and Aaron's involvement really began to spiral. The rumours picked up after it was confirmed by US Weekly that Aaron and Danica Patrick, a racing car driver, had broken up after getting together in 2018.

Sports gossip blogger Terez Owens revealed that the pair had been seen together in Tahoe.

September 2020

Aaron was a guest on the Pat McAfee show last autumn, where he hinted that there might be some different things going on in his life. He spoke about having "a new and increased love of life" and said that he had "made decisions and changes and habits" that put him in a better head space. He revealed that a lot of things had come together and that he was viewing things through a positive lens.

February 2021

In early February at the 10th annual CBS NFL Honors show, Aaron casually mentioned that he got engaged to be married. Shailene then appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where she confirmed the rumours and speculation surrounding their romance.

"Yeah, we got engaged a while ago," she revealed in February. "When I first met him, I think my dog like pulled me aside and was like, 'if you don’t date this dude, I will disown you as my mother because the three feet that I run with you when you throw a ball is nothing compared to the marathon I’m able to run with him,'" the Fault in our Stars actress joked.

April 2021

In April, Aaron posted a video of the loved up couple on Instagram – where Shailene quizzed her husband-to-be.

It is reported that a source spoke to US Weekly in April and revealed that he is "still thinking about which family members to invite. It’s something that’s weighing heavily on him." The source also revealed that Shailene and Aaron plan to get married in California, because "that's where the majority of their friends and family live."

May 2021

On May 1, the couple were seen out with their friends Miles Teller and his wife, Keleigh Sperry Teller at the Kentucky Derby.

While later on that same month, the pair enjoyed a holiday together in Hawaii.

June 2021

Shailene spoke to Shape, where she revealed that the first step that she and Aaron made was moving in together – which was brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic.

She said “Starting a relationship where you immediately move in with someone—because it’s a pandemic and you can’t just get on a plane and go back and forth on weekends—taught us a lot about each other very quickly,” she said. “We jumped in headfirst and got some of the sticky bits out of the way early.

"I have the perspective that I would have met Aaron in any context, any space in time because I feel we were meant to be together.”

July 2021

USA Today reported that Shailene sends handwritten letters "multiple times a week" to her fiancé Aaron. In an interview with the website, she said "We met during the pandemic, so there wasn't really lots of time apart. Getting to know each other happened in the physical."
