Why the Golden Globes Didn’t Air on TV Last Night—and Who Actually Won
The fact that this year's Golden Globes ceremony didn't air on NBC may have left some curious fans raising an eyebrow.
After nearly eight decades of star-studded red carpets and heartfelt acceptance speeches, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association switched gears on January 9 by holding a private ceremony with socially distanced H.F.P.A. members and a few guests—sans the red carpet , A-list celebrities and media coverage. But why?
As it turns out, there's been quite a bit of controversy surrounding the H.F.P.A. after the Los Angeles Times published an investigation into the non-profit organization in February of 2021, which revealed questionable ethics and a lack of diversity amongst its members. As a result, NBC pulled out as the broadcaster in 2022, and several companies, including Netflix, Amazon and WarnerMedia, have cut ties with the H.F.P.A. The organization has since released their response, stating that "implementing transformational changes" remains their "top priority." Meanwhile, NBC is still open to airing future shows, provided that the organization "executes on its plan" and demonstrates “meaningful reform.”
Still, while fans missed out on a full ceremony, the Golden Globes did deliver a new list of the winners.
