These Comfy Boy Shorts Are Hands Down the Best Part of My Day Rn

From Cosmopolitan

My underwear drawer has never been filled with sexy lil thongs or intricately laced bikinis. I’m more of a comfort > everything type of gal, so rain or shine, you can pretty much always find me wearing a pair of good ol’ cotton boy shorts (the rattier and more worn in, the better). Comfort aside, my favorite thing about them is that they don’t require a ton of bells and whistles—i.e., they’re usually cheap (5 for $5? Yes, pls) and I can buy them in bulk. So when a pair of $24 Tommy John boy shorts landed on my desk last year, I literally rolled my eyes and wrote ’em off as an overpriced version of what I already had.

In the name of ~journalism~, though, I decided to at least take them home and give them a try. And that, dear reader, is when I discovered the true, g’damn meaning of comfort.

PSA: These boy shorts will change your life

Hot tip: These boy shorts are so popular, they’re already running low in sizes—DW, you can also shop ’em on Amazon and Tommy John, and they even come in more colors).

The deets

Ignoring the price tag for a sec (DW, I’ll get there), the first thing that stood out to me about these boy shorts was how soft and silky they were. And since we should all be staying inside to prevent the spread of COVID-19, they make lounging at home all day so much better. Like I said, cotton is a nonnegotiable for me when it comes to underwear, but this fabric felt cooler and lighter than any of my other ones.

A quick glance at the label and I learned these bbs are made with 86 percent pima cotton (a moisture-wicking cotton that’s designed to keep you nice and cool) and 14 percent spandex (which gives them a really nice and comfortable stretch). And unlike the thick waistbands I had grown accustomed to with my underwear, the Tommy John band was soft, stretchy, and durable (no bunching or rolling included).

The test

After getting acquainted with the look and feel, I tossed aside my usual favorite (a black pair that I’ve had waaaaay longer than I’d like to admit) and threw on the Tommy Johns under a pair of high-waisted jeans. I briefly checked myself out in the mirror—no awkward bunching or panty lines!—and went on with my day. Now, IDK how to say this without sounding weird? But I felt so calm and cozy all day—like I was sitting on a big, fluffy cloud.

Like any good skeptic, I put the boy shorts through one last test before I actually confessed my love: the washing machine. I usually stay away from expensive loungewear fabrics since they typically don’t wash as well as their cheap counterparts (especially when you’re using a rusty old machine at the laundromat like moi), but after washing them on cold and drying on low, my fancy little boy shorts came out even...softer?

The verdict

Fast-forward one year later and my Tommy John boy shorts are hands down my favorite thing I own (so much so that I miiight have expanded my collection to a handful of pairs). Like, yes, they’re definitely more expensive than your average underwear ($24 per pair is a lot—I know), but once you try ’em, you won’t be able to go back. It may seem unnecessary or insignificant, but wearing these boy shorts brings me serious joy—and TBH, I’ll take all the joy I can get these days.

BTW: If you’re still not a fan of boy shorts (despite my ~glowing~ review), you’re in luck. The brand also offers a ton of other styles, including seamless thongs, comfy briefs, and more. Happy shopping.
