Columbus Academy has named a pair of new fall coaches.

Jacque DeMarco has succeeded Anne Horton as field hockey coach and Brian Stutzman has replaced Matt Thompson as girls soccer coach. DeMarco also will succeed Horton as assistant athletics director at the end of the school year.

Horton announced her retirement after 31 seasons and has been the only coach in the program’s history. She compiled a record of 526-46-29 with 12 state titles, and completed her 38th season overall of coaching field hockey with a record of 600-72-39.

DeMarco was the field hockey coach at Columbus School for Girls last season, guiding the Unicorns to a 6-10 record. She previously coached at the collegiate level for 14 seasons, including nine at Kenyon College, where she was the field hockey coach as well as an instructor and Title IX coordinator.

“I am excited and grateful to become a member of the Academy athletic department,” DeMarco said in a press release. “Athletics at Academy is a great community that mirrors the excellence of the school. As a coach and administrator, I am honored to have the opportunity to work in this community.

“The field hockey program has a strong tradition of excellence and success, and I look forward to building on the impressive legacy of the program and working with a team of great coaches and driven athletes.”

Stutzman was an assistant coach under Thompson the past five seasons. Under Thompson, who is Academy’s new upper school dean of students, the Vikings went 58-19-14 with two league titles and the program’s only two appearances in the state tournament.

“I’ve seen the work ethic of the players in this program and have no doubt we can find solutions to any problem we face,” Stutzman said in the press release. “We will work to achieve the goals we set for ourselves individually and as a team, but most importantly we’ll enjoy playing soccer in the process.”
