Vending machines are a beautiful thing, making it easy to get a quick midday or late night snack. But let's be honest, sometimes the offerings inside a vending machine just don't cut it and you need something a little more substantial. Enter: the Pizza ATM, a fresh pizza vending machine that was just installed at the University of North Florida.
Pizza ATMs have been making their way to college campuses recently, with Ohio State University introducing one to their campus last year and Xavier installing one back in 2016. The latest to get in on the trend is University of North Florida that installed the ATM for better food options during late study hours.
Pizza ATMs do require university kitchen staff to reload ingredients and prepare dough, as per the brand's website. But a Pizza ATM fresh pies are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for students. In an interview with Jacksonville.com, associate vice president of Administration and Finance for UNF, Vince Smyth, said that these hours allow for students to have a hot food option close by during peak study hours, which he considers to be 3 a.m.
“The reality is that in this particular area of the campus, the 500 students who are living in this area do not have anything other than our regular vending machines for snacks and sodas. Whereas our other resident students have good opportunities for hot foods right through 3 a.m.,” Smyth said.
When campus cafeterias or eateries are closed, the Pizza ATM is a dependable option for students that accepts on-campus dining dollars. Smyth also said that although a Pizza ATM costs $60,000, it's a great investment so students can always have a hot meal available, especially during late night (or early morning!) study sessions. These things sound insanely convenient and way too cool so uhhh, can I go back to college now?
