Cole Sprouse Revealed the Real Reason Behind His Goatee

Most people are chopping off their hair these days, but sheltering in place has had the opposite effect on Cole Sprouse. Over the past few weeks, Cole has been going against the curve and growing out his hair — more specifically, his facial hair — but there is a bona fide reason behind his decision.

Earlier this month, Cole debuted his new look, consisting of a goatee and mustache, with a short post on Instagram. "How to polarize a young fanbase," he captioned the post then. And, well, it did just so. Cole's comments were suddenly flooded with comments from fans both for and against the new look. Now, in a virtual interview with Jimmy Fallon, Cole finally revealed why exactly he's been growing out his facial hair and it's not only to "polarize."

"I was growing my hair out and my mustache for a role, but then quarantine hit, and I figured, you know what? I'm going to be playing a 17-year-old for the next 80 years of my life. I might as well give myself a second to actually figure if I can grow a mustache," Cole explained to Jimmy.

Cole, who now sports a full-on handlebar mustache, also told Jimmy he's been taking his 'tasche grooming very seriously as of late. "This has taken me about the fullness of the quarantine thus far. I've been trimming. I've been making sure it all looks kosher. My brother and I have been in a violent competition for whose facial hair is more robust," he revealed.

When Jimmy suggests getting a mustache comb to keep it tamed and polished, Cole said he's been using mustache wax to keep the ends nice and smooth, and honestly, it's a look! Whether you stan Cole's new look or not, one thing is clear: This is a whole new era for Cole. Well, until production on Riverdale resumes at least.
