Coco Gauff Pushes to Victory After Seeing Justin Bieber In the Stands

Tennis star Coco Gauff is pulling inspiration to win from wherever she can — and in this weekend's case, it was Justin Bieber.

The 19-year-old tennis pro secured a comeback victory against Belgium's Elise Mertens on Friday night at the U.S. Open after she noticed Bieber and his wife, Hailey Bieber in the stands.

“I definitely saw who was there,” Gauff told ESPN after the match. “I thought, ‘I cannot lose in front of Justin Bieber.’ I didn’t lose a game after I saw that.”

With Bieber's presence pushing her to keep going, Gauff secured the 3-6 6-3 6-0 win. The couple looked like they were having a fun night out as they sat in a box at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City. Bieber was wearing a backward polka dot hat with chunky pink sunglasses, while Hailey was sporting a stylish oversized leather jacket.

Gauff later said in a post-match interview that she was “definitely starstruck” when she noticed Bieber in the crowd, noting that “Never Say Never” was one of her “favorite songs as a kid.”

“I could go through all his songs. Then Hailey, too, coming. I guess it was a little date night for them, which was really cool,” Gauff continued.

Gauff has already played in front of some huge names — including President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama during her first-round match earlier in the week. NBA star Jimmy Butler was also in attendance on Friday night and Gauff said she was “surprised” that he's come to watch her play multiple times.

“I’m just like ‘[Jimmy Butler] is busy. Why is he coming to watch me play?’” Gauff joked. “But it's a really cool experience.”

Other celebrities who have been spotted at the U.S. Open include Anna Wintour, Billie Jean King, and Lindsey Vonn.

Gauff is set to play against Caroline Wozniacki on Sunday afternoon.
