Attention all intrepid karate students: we're already only a couple of weeks away from a new batch of Cobra Kai episodes. Netflix, thank you for giving us a brand new season every time the holidays hit, on the dot, from our dojo to yours.
On Thursday, we received a new trailer for the next season of Cobra Kai, which shows infamous villain from The Karate Kid III—the bloodthirsty karate instructor Terry Silver—returning to wreak havoc on the Valley. By the looks of it, Silver will launch yet another wave of brain games against Danny LaRusso, Robbie will be a little snitch, and Johnny won't be able to hold back his lingering hate of Danny. What else did you expect?
Here's everything we know about the next season of Cobra Kai so far.
When Will Cobra Kai Season Four Be Released?
Regardless of your affiliation(s)—Miyagi-do, Cobra Kai, or... Eagle Fang?—fear not: Netflix announced that Season 4 will be released on December 31st, 2021.
What Will Cobra Kai Season Four Be About?
We get the main storyline in Season Four flat-out from Kreese: Winner in the All Valley Karate Tournament gets to stay in the martial arts game. Loser leaves town. With the students of Daniel LaRusso's Miyagi-do and Johnny Lawrence's Eagle Fang seemingly teaming up in the Season Three finale, it looks like we'll see an all-out war against Kreese's Cobra Kai in the tournament. And for the first time, we finally have a pretty clear idea of who has landed on the dark side or not. Our heroes include Miguel, Sam, Demitri, and Hawk (!), who'll square up against Tori, Robby, and Kyler. Regardless of winners/losers, it'll all make for some wild battles come karate-time.
In an interview with Esquire, Hayden Schlossberg confirmed that craziness at the All Valley and the tossing and turning of allegiances will be the main focus of the next season: "It's clear we ended Season Three with this high-stakes tournament agreement they made. We'll see how that plays out. You could speculate as to what we would do with that in the season, but that certainly is the jumping off point. We've seen the tournament in Season One. Now, allegiances have shifted, certain students are on different sides, and the stakes have never been higher as what that tournament means… Going into Season Four, you have a lot of fun things I think to look forward to as opposed to at the end of Season Two, [when] we blew up the world... In Season Four, there's wish fulfillment for the fans of seeing Johnny and Daniel teaming up to stop [Kreese]."
Though, next season, it'll look like Cobra Kai might just get the help of a certain billionaire/karate instructor/psychopath: Terry Silver, whom we catch getting his karate on in the new trailer. Turns out, the flashbacks to Kreese's time in Vietnam weren't just for the purposes of telling us how the guy got his karate obsession. It also served as an origin story for his friendship with Karate Kid III villain Terry Silver, who funded the opening of the Cobra Kai dojo in the first place. When Kreese saves his platoon in Vietnam, Silver runs up to him and says, "I owe you man, you saved my ass. Anything you need, I'm there for you, your whole life. You hear me Johnny? Your whole life. I owe you." And what do we see in the closing moments of Cobra Kai's Season Three finale? Kreese make a call for some help.
Two more thoughts as we head down this long, long road of martial arts: First up is, you think Netflix will let Cobra Kai just ride off with seven more seasons without complementing it with some Marvel-esque spinoffs? In Esquire's interview with the Cobra Kai creators, Jon Hurwitz confirmed that they have thought about telling more stories in the Karate Kid universe:
Anything that you can imagine spinning off from the original Karate Kid movies, we've most likely talked about in one way or another… We have some very, very big ideas. We have some small ideas. We have ideas that are different tones and ideas that we feel are more one hour, ideas that are more half hour, ideas that wouldn't be live-action necessarily. We keep thinking about it. We developed some of these in our heads. And it’s our hope that with the new audience on Netflix that has found the show and has celebrated the show that it will put some wind in the sails of this franchise and allow us to realize the potential of it.
And second is, could anyone see Cobra Kai swerving in the Harry Potter direction? Meaning: The Harry Potter series similarly leaned fun/family-friendly in its first three installments. But it all had a hint of some of the darkness down the line, which would be realized with a major death in the fourth book, The Goblet of Fire, and set the grim tone for the rest of the series. With a few PG-13 moments in Season Three of Cobra Kai (we're not over Demitri getting his arm snapped in half), couldn't you see Cobra Kai growing up with its characters and evolving into a little more of an adult watch, just as Harry Potter did? Maybe Season Four actually will see a major character get hurt, even more so than Miguel did at the end of Season Two. This isn't out of the realm of possibility, especially with a guy like Terry Silver around. (The guy made teenage Danny LaRusso karate-chop a dummy made of wood until his appendages bled, people.) Or maybe we'll just watch Danny and Johnny roast each other for eight more seasons. Honestly? We'd love it either way.
