I didn’t know I needed a new handbag until I saw the styles in the Coach Shine Collection a few weeks ago. OK, so I didn’t really need a new bag, but when I saw how perfect the new Penn Shoulder Bag was with its retro baguette shape and shiny patent pink finish, I was hooked. To me, this is a grown-up iteration of my first handbag, the one I begged my mom to bring me to the mall to buy even though I didn’t own a wallet, cell phone or lipstick to stash inside.
When our friends at Coach asked if I wanted test drive the bag before making a purchase, obviously, I said yes without thinking twice. After just two days of toting this shoulder bag around, I was completely smitten.

Initially, the bag drew me in for the statement look I knew it could bring to any outfit. And then once I had the bag for myself, I realized it was so much more than simply a gorgeous accessory. It has built-in card slots — enough for my driver’s license, debit card and credit card — and just enough room for my phone, keys and ChapStick. Meaning I could bring my essentials without feeling weighed down by any extra junk I didn’t need.
The cutest detail of this bag — one I didn’t even notice from the online photos — was the turn-lock closure on the zipper pull. Though not essential to functionality, this little brass hardware piece lets you lock the pull in place.
Another element I found pleasantly surprising was the fact that the shoulder strap is removable. The second time I took the bag out, I styled it as a clutch for an evening look with black jeans and a silk top. You’ve got to love that versatility.
As it turns out, my interpretation of this bag as a ’90s throwback was completely on point. One of Coach’s archival Y2K styles inspired the making of this bag, giving it a slim, swingy shape that’s so archetypal of retro trends. Plus, it features contemporary updates like those built-in card slots and textured monogram detailing.
It seems that I’m not alone in my admiration of this bag, as other Coach shoppers have given it an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. “LOVE everything about the bag and it hold my iPhone, cards, keys, lipstick and more makeup and a few more essentials,” one reviewer commented.
And if pink is not your thing, there’s still a Penn Shoulder Bag for you. The style also comes in green (also very Y2K-inspired) and classic black.
