Ever purchase the perfect cherry-red lipstick online, only to find out when it arrived that cherry red is most definitely not your color? Or, maybe you've spent way too much time scouring the Sephora floor to try and find your perfect lip color, eventually walking out of the store empty-handed and full of frustration. Finding a lip color that complements your skin tone and undertones isn't an easy or simple task, and it's exactly what Clinique's latest launch aims to improve.
Following a slew of customizable skin-care launches over the past year (most notably, Clinique iD moisturizer), Clinique’s latest personalized product launch is in the makeup department: Even Better Pop Lip Colour Foundation. Basically, the brand uses what it calls a "color-match innovation" to find you three lipstick shades that flatter your unique skin tone and undertones.
"Clinique was the original customizable beauty brand from the day it launched," Janet Pardo, senior vice president of global product development at Clinique, tells Allure. "The Clinique Computer and 3-Step System were designed to identify your skin type and match you with the right products for your skin. Clinique iD and Shade-Match Science are the modern evolution of that idea. Everyone’s beauty is unique, and they want their products to reflect that; now we have the technology to scale it."
Here’s how it works: In order to find your three ideal lip colors, you’ll first need to find your foundation match in one of the 56 shades of Clinique’s Even Better Makeup SPF 15. The best way to find your ideal foundation shade, and subsequent three lipstick shades, is to go in-person to a store that carries the brand, where a consultant can assist you (although you can also use the brand’s online Shade-Match Science page). After an expert has helped you find your perfect shade of foundation, they’ll use a color wheel to determine your three lip-color matches — there are 28 different shades in all — which they’ve categorized as Naked, Casual, and Glam.
Wondering how said color wheel works? According to Clinique, it uses an algorithm that’s based on the Golden Ratio, a mathematic ratio that’s been said to equate to harmonious proportion in both art (Da Vinci reportedly coined it), nature, and people's appearances (it’s also used in many eyebrow shaping techniques). In the context of the lip-color wheel, the algorithm basically deepens the intensity of your Naked shade to calculate your Casual and Glam shade colors.
"Finding your undertone can be tricky, [because] you either have a warm or a cool one, but not both," explains celebrity makeup artist Anastasia Durasova, explaining how this new system helps simplify a usually arduous task. "The confusing part is [that] there are so many different shades of skin, and your undertone might change from summer to winter due to a tan."
Additionally, we all know firsthand just how right — or wrong — a certain lip color can feel once you swipe it on. Sometimes, it just doesn't click. "Often, we get stuck in certain colors that we started off with, tones [that] don’t really flatter your skin tone," says makeup artist Geo Brian Hennings. "It’s important to wear the correct lip color shade because it can affect your whole makeup look."
And, of course, not all of us have the time (or desire) to figure these things out, which is why there is definitely a market for a more personalized and streamlined approach to lipstick shade-matching.
Another bit of good news: Sticking to its brand ethos, Clinique also made their latest launch affordable at $20 per shade. Clinique's Even Better Pop Lip Colour Foundation is available now on clinique.com and in Clinique-carrying retailers nationwide.
