Clinique’s iconic Dramatically Different moisturizer just got a major upgrade that takes customized skin care to the next level: meet Clinique iD.

This new custom hydration system combines moisturizer and serum, and is designed by skin type and concern. Users can choose from three different “hydrating bases” and five “active cartridge concentrates” to make a unique formula. The innovative concept is cleverly designed to dispense 90 percent hydration base and 10 percent active cartridge concentrate with every pump.

Available in 15 different combinations for $39, the Clinique iD custom hydrator is the multitasking workhorse your skin care regimen needs.

The moisturizers

The first step of Clinique iD regimen is to select one of three lightweight hydrating bases.

Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly: A refreshing, water-like jelly that delivers 24 hours of hydration and protects skin from daily pollution. The oil-free formula blends into skin immediately and doesn’t leave behind a sticky residue, making it perfect for all skin types.

Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+: The original best seller replenishes moisture and strengths skin with 8-hour hydration. It’s made with glycerin and hyaluronic acid to attract that moisture into the skin, which is great for dry to combination skin.

Dramatically Different Oil-Control Gel: A fast-absorbing, balancing moisturizer made for combination to oily skin. The gel formula is infused with skin-strengthening ingredients to rebuild skin’s moisture barrier.

Each base has a unique texture, but they are all lightweight, fragrance-free and compatible with the active cartridge of your choice.

The cartridges

The last stage of a personalized Clinique iD regimen is combining your hydrating base with an active cartridge concentrate based on your primary skin concern. Each one of the five contains a powerful blend of ingredients that address your needs.

Irritation (green): A mix of Lactobacillus ferment soothes irritated skin and helps boost skin’s natural defenses against stressors to maintain its balance. Other calming ingredients include white tea leaf, licorice root, algae and red seaweed extracts.

Pores and Uneven Texture (blue): Exfoliating alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic and lactic) obliterate dead skin cells and congested pores. The result is glowing skin and a reduced appearance of pores.

Uneven Skin Tone (white): Japanese Angelica root extract is the main ingredient that works to brighten dark spots and even out skin’s tone. Other radiance-boosting components include vitamin C and salicylic acid, which help reduce discoloration and smooth texture, respectively.

Fatigue (orange): Energize dull, tired skin with Clinique’s newest ingredient, taurine. It’s an amino acid that boosts cellular activity and works with mimosa bark extract to wake up and refresh your complexion. This concentrate also has salicylic and glycolic acid to boost radiance.

Lines and Wrinkles (purple): Whey protein works to smooth fine lines, as well as hydrate and plump skin to make it look more youthful. The polypeptide is rich in amino acids, which have anti-aging benefits.

Bottom line

Each bottle is $39 and contains enough to you last for three months if used as directed (twice daily). Clinique iD essentially combines two steps in one — using a moisturizer and serum — making it a standout. A simple Clinique.com questionnaire removes any guesswork by guiding you through the process of customizing your combination, whether your goal is to address redness or aging.

If you’re looking for an affordable skin care product that is efficient and easy to use, Clinique iD certainly fits the bill.

Clinique iD Custom-Blend Hydrator Collection ($39) is available at Clinique, Ulta, Sephora or Macy’s.
