There’s a ‘Christmas Comet’ in the Sky and You Might Not Need a Telescope to See It
If you look up in the sky these next few days, you may just get to see something bright and magical. And no, it’s not Santa’s sleigh. There’s a (pine) green comet passing Earth just in time for Christmas.
Comet 46P/Wirtanen, commonly known as “The Christmas Comet,” passed within 7.1 million miles of Earth on Sunday, (the closest one to date), and if you’re lucky enough to be looking in the right place at the right time, you might see it with your naked eye.
This green guy is constantly moving, but the best way to find it is to identify the stars around it (if you know your constellations, you’re in luck!). But…if you’re like the rest of us, using these star charts from the University of Maryland will definitely help you out.
Better hurry, it’s only visible for the next few days. Hint: If you’re looking tonight, look for the constellation Taurus.
