Christmas Came Early at Last Night’s Premiere of Noelle

Christmas Came Early at Last Night’s Premiere of Noelle

With a winter chill settling in over Manhattan, the crowd on hand at last night’s Cinema Society premiere of Noelle was eager to lean into the holiday spirit. The festive film, out today from Disney+, stars Anna Kendrick as the daughter of Santa Claus, who is tasked with bringing back her dad from a getaway-gone-awry—all in time to save Christmas.

Fittingly, Kendrick arrived to Manhattan’s SVA Theatre last night accessorized with an oversize, festive bow; a design by August Getty. “I mean, if not for this premiere, then when?” Kendrick told Vogue as her publicist leaned down to adjust the gown’s bejeweled train. “I feel like a present.”

She’s joined on-screen by her two brothers, played by Billy Eichner and Bill Hader, who bring humor to the quirky holiday tale, but it was costar Shirley MacLaine, as Mrs. Claus, who stole the show. “We have a scene in the third act where Shirley talks about the spirit of love during Christmas, and that scene gets me every time,” she added. “She is such a damn firecracker, but has that vulnerability in her where I would be in a scene with her and have to pinch myself and say, ‘Oh my God, it’s Shirley-freaking-MacLaine.’ ”

Following the screening, guests decamped to the Top of the Standard, where the posh watering hole had been remixed with holiday flare—from the heaps of gold and silver ornaments to the cocktails, which included a hot spiked cider for those feeling extra naughty. Even the soundtrack, a mix of campy holiday classics like “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree” kept the dance floor full until the twinkling Christmas lights were turned off and the house lights came on.
