In a now-deleted tweet, Chrissy Teigen jumped to the defence of Meghan Markle in response to criticism over the essay in which she revealed she had suffered a miscarriage. Yesterday, in a moving essay shared in the New York Times, titled 'The Losses We Share,' the Duchess of Sussex described the "unbearable grief" she and her husband Prince Harry are navigating after losing their unborn second child in July this year.

In September, Chrissy Teigen also experienced the unthinkable pain of losing a baby, when she and her husband John Legend shared the heartbreaking news that their baby boy Jack had passed away after being delivered at around 20 weeks of pregnancy.

At the time, Chrissy shared a series of intimate black and white photos taken with Jack in the hospital, writing the caption, "We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before." While many praised her for her bravery, and for opening up a stigmatised conversation about this kind of grief, there were other thoughtless onlookers who criticised her for sharing something so personal.

So if anyone knows how it feels to be attacked for making yourself vulnerable in public, it's Chrissy Teigen. And it's therefore no surprise that she felt compelled to defend the Duchess of Sussex in the wake of her difficult news being made public.

On Twitter, one person stood up for the trolls criticising Meghan for talking openly about her heartache. "Is anyone really questioning the pain and sheer awfulness of suffering a miscarriage, or are they perhaps criticising Meghan's decision to write a 1,000 word op-Ed about herself?" the user wrote, questioning: "What does it add to the resources already available for those who go through a tragedy like this?"

Upon seeing this perspective, Chrissy tweeted: "Award for today's absolute piece of sh*t goes to [name of user]. Congratulations, piece of sh*t."

In hindsight, the cookbook author decided to delete her tweet, exchanging it for a post that read: "Sorry forgot I’m trying to be nicer lol."

She later shared that she's not tweeting much because "I’m honestly in a bit of a grief depression hole." She reassured fans, however, that they shouldn't worry about her. "I have so much help around me to get better and I’ll be fixed soon," she wrote.

While Meghan Markle may be bearing the brunt of some harsh words following the revelation of her sad news, on the whole, most people are very thankful for her brave honesty. Baby loss awareness charity, Tommy's, has praised the Duchess for using her public platform to speak so candidly about having a miscarriage, telling Cosmopolitan UK: "Mothers like Meghan sharing their stories is a vital step in breaking down [the] stigma and shame [surrounding baby loss]."

They added: "Meghan's honesty and openness sends a powerful message to anyone who loses a baby: this may feel incredibly lonely, but you are not alone. Friends and family, doctors and midwives, all of us at support organisations like Tommy’s – we’re here."
