Turns out Will Smith and Chris Rock have some history at the Oscars, which could shed light on Will’s reaction to Chris’s joke about Jada Pinkett Smith during last night’s ceremony.

To catch everyone up real quick (although pretty sure there isn’t one human on the planet who is unaware of what happened), Chris made a joke about Jada starring in G.I. Jane 2—which wasn’t appropriate since Jada’s been open about her struggles with alopecia. And Will reacted to said joke by walking onstage, slapping Chris across the face, and then yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth.”

However, the tension between Will and Chris at the Oscars goes back several years. A source tells People that Chris also made a joke about Jada during his 2016 Oscars hosting gig, which Will wasn’t thrilled about and isn’t over:

“When Chris hosted the Oscars in 2016, Jada was boycotting because of ‘Oscars So White.’ In his monologue, he made fun of her, saying she can’t boycott something she wasn’t invited to,” the source said. “Will was still mad about that.”

The specific joke in question, which you can watch in the video of Chris’s monologue below, was: “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited.”

According to Variety, Chris has “declined to file a police report” against Will. Meanwhile, the Academy has released a statement saying, “The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”
