Chris Godwin says he didn't want to give up No. 12 to Tom Brady at first

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin gave up No. 12 to Tom Brady, but it wasn’t easy. Godwin says he was initially bothered by the idea of giving up his number, but he came to terms with it and is excited to wear No. 14 in 2020.

The 24-year-old Godwin made those comments while appearing on The Checkdown. Godwin explained that he’s worn No. 12 since high school, and that made it difficult for him to part with the number. But he recognized he had to give it up to the GOAT. Godwin added he’s hoping the move gets him two to three rings.

(Relevant quotes begin around 1:17:00.)

Godwin admits No. 12 has been part of his identity throughout his career, but adds, “When the GOAT comes calling, you kinda concede to him.” And in case you were wondering whether Godwin is still upset about the decision, he quickly says, “I was happy to do it.”

Big things are expected from the Bucs with Brady under center. Given the amount of talent the Bucs have on offense, Brady won’t be lacking receiving options. Godwin’s play should make him one of Brady’s top targets, but perhaps Godwin’s willingness to give up No. 12 will earn him a few extra looks at the goal line.

Probably not, but it can’t hurt to make your quarterback happy.
