There are two events that regularly dominate a movie’s press tour, throughout junkets, red carpets, and late-night appearances. A baby on the way is one (George Clooney knows something about that). And a breakup is another. Jenny Slate and Chris Evans—she a comedian, he literally Captain America—are in the process of fielding that particular challenge. They met on the set of the soon-to-be released Gifted and dated for nine months. Though the split is still fresh, they seem to be handling the challenge well.

Evans recently told Esquire that he preferred to “steer clear” of relationship questions, but he finally opened up, giving Slate a glowing review in People. “She’s my favorite human,” he said. “She’s the best. I’ve never ever ever met someone in my life who has a mastery of the English language the way she does. She’ll give you one sentence and there’s no fat to it. You’re like, ‘You just chose such an unbelievable collection of words that beautifully articulate what you say.’

“It’s like an art form talking with her, because the visuals associated with her expression are just so colorful,” Evans continued. “She’s so vulnerable, so honest, so interested in other people more than herself, she’s incredibly compassionate, there’s just nothing to not love about her.”

These remarks arrived in print just a little over week after Vulture published a Slate profile, in which she referenced the Esquire profile, and also called him “vulnerable.”

“Chris is truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, to the point where sometimes I would look at him and it would kind of break my heart,” she said. “He’s really vulnerable, and he’s really straightforward. He’s like primary colors. He has beautiful, big, strong emotions, and he’s really sure of them. It’s just wonderful to be around. His heart is probably golden-colored, if you could paint it.”

The breadcrumbs left on the press trail add up to genuine and mutual admiration. Whatever happens, though, the Gifted red carpet will be an interesting one to watch, like so many red carpets that welcomed exes before it.
