Chip Gaines Gets Candid About His Parenting Mistakes

Amidst the coronavirus crisis, spending long days and nights hunkered down at home is tough for everyone. For parents, it creates a set of unique challenges of juggling their own lives and priorities with the caring, education, and now summertime fun, of their child or children.

Throughout quarantine life, we've loved seeing glimpses into the household of Chip and Joanna Gaines, whether it's a family baking adventure or walk around their farm in Waco, Texas. How cute is baby Crew?

We've also turned to celebrities for parenting advice during these tough times, and we have to say, Chip Gaines has delivered some pretty solid words of wisdom to us all.

Back in 2019, Gaines sat down with our sister publication PEOPLE and doled out some amazing wisdom and frank revelations that are proving particularly timely right about now. “I made every mistake in the book with Drake and Ella both,” he told PEOPLE. “There’s lots of stories of me leaving kids places I shouldn’t have left them. I’ve forgotten birthdays. Afterward you’re like, ‘I’m the worst person.’" (We'll raise you forgetting birthdays with forgetting days of the week!)

“But I’m a firm believer that it’s the mistakes that make us who we are. We learn the most from them, and I think that goes for parenting as well,” Gaines continues, reminding us that every shortcoming and flub as a parent can be reframed as an opportunity to grow.

Now is the time to focus on the little blessings.

With five kids and a busy career, we'll admit we're in awe of how Chip manages to juggle it all. But if this turbulent time in history has taught us anything, it's that you should never underestimate the power of slowing down and enjoying a family game night.

Now Mr. Gaines, can you also share your secret with us for making shiplap look so darn attractive?
