Chesterville woman dies in 2-vehicle crash in New Sharon

May 3—NEW SHARON — An 18-year-old Chesterville woman died Tuesday when the vehicle her mother was driving rear-ended a recycling truck stopped on the side of Farmington Falls Road, authorities said.

Kaylie Ladd was a front seat passenger in the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Melanie Greene, 39, of Chesterville, according to officials. Firefighters had to extricate Ladd from the SUV.

Greene's two other children, a toddler and an infant, were also passengers. All three suffered minor injuries and are expected to make a full recovery, according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Bruce Sweetser, 41, of Farmington, was driving the recycling truck owned by Archie's Inc. of Mexico, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said Wednesday. It was unclear if he was injured.

Sweetser had pulled over to pick up recyclables, according to Moss.

The crash was reported about 2:19 p.m.

Franklin County deputies, state police troopers and first responders from New Sharon and Farmington Fire Rescue and Chesterville fire departments were at the scene, along with NorthStar EMS ambulance.

The road was shut down until 5 p.m., Nichols wrote in an email. Traffic was rerouted to Industry Road for drivers headed to Farmington.

State police are in charge of the investigation.
