From Harper's BAZAAR

Last Friday night, the ever-elusive Frank Ocean released a new single by surprise, titled "Chanel." The shoutout to the French fashion house isn't superficial; in the opening lines of the song he references the brand's double-C logo while opening up about his bisexuality: "My guy pretty like a girl / And he got fight stories to tell / I see both sides like Chanel / See on both sides like Chanel."

He chose the right brand for the song, since the house's founder, Coco Chanel, was also reportedly bisexual. To ring in the new single, Ocean also posted a shot of the rocket from Chanel's Fall 2017 space-themed runway show on Tumblr.

Yesterday, Chanel proved the obsession was mutual when it posted two mysterious ads on Instagram quoting the recent song. The first read, "We see both sides like Frank," and the second referenced the duality of the lyrics with side-by-side photos of ocean and land.

The latter features a bottle of Chanel's new No.5 L'eau fragrance (which Lily-Rose Depp modeled last fall). It's a fitting product since its campaign slogan is, "You know me and you don't," which also mirrors Ocean's polysemic lyrics.

The mutual shoutouts sent fans into confusion and a frenzy, lending some to think the Grammy-winning artist and the brand were hinting at a fashion collaboration. That seems highly unlikely, however, considering how rarely the brand participates in celebrity collabs. A more realistic possibility might be that Ocean would star in an ad, but even that seems far-fetched since Chanel routinely features its go-to brand ambassadors (i.e. Cara Delevingne, Pharrell Williams, Kristen Stewart, Willow Smith).

But if Ocean's and Chanel's allusions symbolize nothing more than the mutual love between two genuine fans, we're here for it.
