Sir Sean Connery, the famed Scottish actor whose decades-long career was celebrated by awards and knighthood, has died at age 90. Connery played the iconic role of James Bond in seven films, spanning from the first Bond film in 1962 to his last appearance in the role in 1983's Never Say Never Again. He won an Oscar in 1988 for his role in The Untouchables, and was knighted in 2000.

According to BBC, Connery died peacefully in his sleep while in the Bahamas. In a statement, Jason Connery, his son, said his father had been "unwell for some time."

The news was announced on the official James Bond Twitter account on Oct. 31.

"We are devastated by the news of the passing of Sir Sean Connery. He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words, 'The name’s Bond... James Bond,'" Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement on the Twitter account. "He revolutionized the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent. He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him.”
