Some state restrictions on non-essential businesses are lifting, which means restaurants and bars are reopening. To help those businesses determine if they should reopen and how to do it in the safest way possible, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released guidelines outlining what actions should be in place.
The guidelines come as a one-page flowchart that acts as a tool for businesses in the food service industry to make reopening decisions. It lists health and safety precautions, like the need for employees to wear cloth face coverings and wash their hands. Other actions include ramping up sanitization efforts and training employees on safety protocols. Businesses must also encourage social distancing as best they can–whether that involves limiting occupancy, spacing out tables, staggering employee shifts, and/or promoting drive-through, curbside pickup, or delivery.
Food service businesses that want to reopen also need to monitor health conditions by encouraging sick employees to stay home and having daily procedures to check employees for symptoms. There also must be a plan in place if an employee gets sick.
Along with the suggested precautions, the guidelines emphasize that businesses need to “check with state and local health officials and other partners to determine the most appropriate actions while adjusting to meet the unique needs and circumstances of the local community.”
Much longer instructions on reopening America have been started but not officially released, according to The Associated Press. The larger set of guidelines will give specifics on how to reopen for a variety of organizations.
