"CATS" Is Being Updated With New Visual Effects

Guess it's not purr-fect yet.

The Jellicle cats are getting a makeover after just a few days in theaters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal told movie theaters that a new version of CATS is on the way, complete with "some improved visual effects."

CATS, which premiered on December 20, has not been popular with critics, and currently has a score of just 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews for the movie have gone viral themselves, as critics and viewers try to grapple with how "bizarre" the film is. THR reports that it is "unheard of for a finished title already in release" to undergo changes while available in theaters, and also adds that CATS director Tom Hooper reportedly "has been upfront about the fact that he barely finished the CGI-heavy [film] in time for the Dec. 16 world premiere in New York City."

When the CATS trailer dropped in July, social media went wild over the "digital fur technology" and the mind-bending "uncanny valley" vibe of the entire production. In the stage show, actors wear wigs, leotards, and legwarmers to approximate fur, but the movie decided to go CGI-style to a, shall we say, unique effect. Why are some cats naked? Why do others wear fur coats, and whose fur was that? Why are some cats wearing shoes? What size, exactly, are these cats? We've still got a lot of questions.

It isn't known what changes will be made to the movie , but THR reports that Hooper allegedly "wanted to make more tweaks to certain effects." Like Macavity randomly making cats disappear and then show up on a boat on the Thames river, which does not happen in the stage show? Or maybe Bustopher Jones eating trash? Or perhaps the dancing cockroach-people? It's CATS — it could be anything!

CATS has not performed particularly well at the box office since its release; Variety shares that the movie opened with just $2.6 million, a sharp contrast to The Rise of Skywalker, which opened with a whopping $195 million. However, the outlet also notes that Christmas is "one of the busiest times" for movies, so CATS could gain more traction then. We know we're curious about the whole thing, and may be attending the Jellicle Ball ourselves during the holiday break.
