If 'winning the red carpet' was possible, Catherine Zeta-Jones would have achieved it at Sunday night's Emmy Awards.

The 51-year-old actor arrived alongside her husband, Michael Douglas, 76, in a strapless wine-coloured gown, which was cut to reveal a daring split.

While it was Douglas' night in terms of nominations - for lead actor in a comedy, and as the executive producer of a comedy, thanks to his Netflix series, The Kominsky Method - all eyes were on wife Zeta-Jones and her stand-out outfit.

The Prodigal Son star was the picture of elegance in the custom strapless dress from New York-based designer Cristina Ottaviano.

The chic gown gathered at the waist and fell to reveal a floor-skimming slit.

After the couple's red carpet appearance, it wasn't long before fans were expressing their thoughts on Zeta-Jones' impressive look, with many commented she seemed to be ageing backwards.

"Catherine Zeta-Jones truly gets prettier with age," one fan wrote on Twitter.

"Power couple! She looks stunning!" someone else added. "Catherine Zeta-Jones has really aged well."

Back in 2019 the Queen America star showcased her signature look at the 76th Annual Golden Globes in a knock-out emerald-green gown designed by Elie Saab.

As she walked down the red carpet with husband Michael Douglas, Twitter had nothing but compliments for her sartorial choice.

Also at the Emmy's, but at the event two years ago, Zeta-Jones commanded attention in a hot pink caped dress with an illusion panel, which came complete with plunging split detailing.

More recently, the Welsh beauty wowed in an elegant black dress with a thigh-high split at this year's Golden Globes.

Attending the prestigious event with her husband, the couple colour-coordinated in matching all-black ensembles, but it was Zeta-Jones go-to thigh-high split detailing that really captured social media.

The flirty detail the actor favours also allows Zeta-Jones the opportunity to properly show off her footwear, as the dress fabric doesn't hide her strappy heels.

"Catherine Zeta Jones has always exuded glamour and sophistication and knows how to wow on red carpet occasions," says fashion expert, Miranda Holder.

"The thigh high split is an 80’s trend that is absolutely her signature as it portrays subtle sex appeal without losing an inch of elegance."

But according to Holder there is a trick to pulling off the thigh-high split look.

"With her incredible physique and breathtaking good looks, Catherine is a striking woman who oozes sex-appeal even in her day to day ‘pap-ready’ outfits, so it’s important for a woman who is so innately sensual to pull back the sensual styling, offering onlookers just a glimpse of her seductive allure to prevent the look from becoming OTT," Holder explains.

"Zeta-Jones strikes the perfect balance with the thigh high split, and looks every inch the Hollywood filmstar."

Zeta-Jones isn't the only star who dares to bare in a split dress, in fact the trend for thigh-high dressing has become a mainstay style for many stars at award dos.

Angelina Jolie famously showed some leg in her Atelier Versace black gown at the 2012 Oscars while Jennifer Lopez is another celeb who loves to show off her pins with a flirty dress parting.
