You might remember my last ode to sweatpants—well, it was really my first ode to sweatpants. I firmly admitted I never really took part in this comfy athleisure category, unless it was a cashmere number that I deemed appropriate, as it was the “fashion” version of sweatpants. Well, now that my life is currently in social isolation and WFH is my new reality, things have changed. FaceTime and Zoom meetings are taking over my day, but I start my days with a routine that’s nearly consistent to when I was going into the office—with a shower and picking out my outfit. A slight twist here, though, is that cashmere joggers are now becoming my day-to-day uniform over the midi dresses and wide-leg trousers I’m accustomed to donning in the office.
Since I’m a fashion editor, my job is to find the latest and greatest in clothing. I’ve come across my fair share of cashmere sweatpants that I love, but frankly, they’ve always broken the bank, so investing in more than a pair or two just wasn’t an option. Couple that with not wanting to spend every day doing laundry, and I’ve been more than happy to discover not one but two new pairs of cashmere pants (which have a matching top if you fancy a head-to-toe look), and so I’ve stocked up on them to get me through the next few weeks to months.
Last fall I was at a press preview for Summersalt, which is where my discovery of good-quality and relatively affordable cashmere pants began. The brand had its always popular swimwear on display, but my eyes gravitated toward the rack hanging in the back, glimmering from the sunlight through the windows. As one of the founders of Summersalt, Reshma Chamberlin, walked me back to the rack, her face was beaming and she talked in excitement about the imminent launch of their new sleepwear and loungewear. I remember her telling me she had wanted to make something affordable that was normally considered indulgent. And let me tell you, they hit the nail on the head with their joggers. They feel so perfect when you slip them on, and they instantly give you that feeling of indulgence and put-together-ness. An added bonus for my lifestyle (and that of anyone who has kids): They’re super easy to run around in when chasing after children in between WFH calls and meetings.
My other favorite is State Cashmere’s ribbed set from Amazon. This one only comes as a set and has a great texture, which makes it unique from my other cashmere pieces. I do sport the outfit as a full-on look, but I also use the pieces to create two different outfits. The pants look amazing paired with tees and hooded sweatshirts, while the sweater can elevate any pair of PJ pants. Not to mention, it also gives you an easy waist-up outfit for your next work Zoom meeting.
Now’s the time to indulge in some retail therapy you can actually wear over and over again. Trust me, these pieces are basic enough that you can wear them virtually day in and day out while we get used to our new normal of social distancing.
