Carson Wentz offers details on knee injury and his recovery

The Philadelphia Eagles still have an important game to play this season, but there’s still a pretty big question surrounding the start of next season.

Quarterback Carson Wentz spoke to the Philadelphia media for the first time since suffering a season-ending knee injury. The biggest news might have been that he tore his ACL and LCL in his left knee, not just the ACL. That adds another layer to his recovery, though he said he still hopes to be back by Week 1.

“Honestly, we’ll see what happens,” Wentz said, according to The News Journal’s Martin Frank. “We’ll see what happens. My goal is to be out there Week 1. The timetable stuff, I wish I knew, just as much as you guys. It’s such a fluid process. We’ll just see what happens.”

There hasn’t been as much angst about Wentz’s recovery because the Eagles made Super Bowl LII without their MVP candidate. Nick Foles has played well in the playoffs, and if Wentz can’t make it back for Week 1, the Eagles still have an NFC championship (and maybe Super Bowl championship?) quarterback to fill in. The Eagles don’t want to rush Wentz back, either. He injured his knee on Dec. 10, so there’s a chance he’s not back by the season opener — Eagles fans would certainly take it, but winning a Super Bowl means they’d start the season a few days earlier too, on Thursday night, Sept. 6.

One of the major storylines of the offseason will be Wentz, considering he was the NFL’s breakout star in 2017. There will be a lot of concern if he’ll be healthy enough to play in Week 1. However, if the Eagles end up raising a championship banner before the season opener, Philadelphia might be too happy to notice who’s under center.
