Carlos Correa donates $10K to family of Houston police officer shot and killed at traffic stop
Carlos Correa doesn’t just play for the Houston Astros, he’s dedicated to making Houston a better place and bringing the community together. Correa’s dedication, as well as his big heart, were on display on Monday when he visited the family of a slain Houston police offer who was beloved by the community.
Correa visited the family of Sandeep Dhaliwal, the first Sikh deputy in Houston, who was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop on Friday. According to sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Correa reached out not just to volunteer his time, but to donate $10,000 to the family who just lost their husband and father.
In a video taken just after the visit, Correa explained why he decided to help the Dhaliwal family, and why he felt connected to Deputy Dhaliwal.

In the wake of Hurricane Maria, which devastated Correa’s native Puerto Rico, Dhaliwal traveled to Puerto Rico to help with recovery efforts. Once Correa found out that Dhaliwal had done that, he felt compelled to help the family of the man who went out of his way to help Puerto Rico. Dhaliwal also filled an 18-wheeler full of supplies to help his fellow Houston residents who were affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Correa tweeted about the visit, including a photo of himself and the Dhaliwal family during his visit.

Correa may be just days from another playoff appearance with the Astros, but he always has time to help the Houston community — especially to honor a man like Dhaliwal, who helped so many others.
A Harris County resident sent us a video of fallen Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal.
“He laughed and joked with all of us, and left a bright impression on my son who is deaf,” she said.
