Carey Mulligan is a rape culture vigilante in this trailer for Promising Young Woman, and consider our tickets bought

Men without the best of intentions should be afraid. They should be very afraid. The trailer for Promising Young Woman, starring Carey Mulligan as a rape-culture vigilante and set to a haunting cover of “Toxic” by Britney Spears, is the revenge film that women of the modern age have been waiting for.

Mulligan stars as Cassie, a woman who dropped out of medical school under “unusual circumstances” (the trailer shows the dean of her school saying she needs to give an unnamed “him” “the benefit of the doubt,” which definitely reads sexual assault to us). Now, Cassie works nights serving justice to “nice guys” (ahem) who think it’s okay to take advantage of an intoxicated woman.

Directed by Killing Eve executive producer Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman seems to twist and play with the idea of rapists who are deemed “promising” young men by judges and defenders while survivors are victim-blamed and shamed for speaking up. The trailer even opens with a man saying, “You know, they put themselves in danger, girls like that.”

Here’s the Promising Young Woman synopsis from Focus Features, and the first trailer below (we’ll be streaming this “Toxic” remix immediately):

Mulligan shares the screen with Bo Burnham, Laverne Cox, Adam Brody, Max Greenfield, Alison Brie, Connie Britton, and Molly Shannon, among others. And there’s nothing we love more than a stacked cast delivering an important message via revenge film.

In fact, the trailer alone is doing a lot for society already.

We’re calling it: Promising Young Woman is our most anticipated movie of 2020. Joker has nothing on Casandra.

What are we doing, you ask? We’re highlighting the entire month of April in our datebooks and taking time off work well in advance. We plan to be at every screening of Promising Young Woman when it premieres because yeah, it looks *that* good.
