Why does Art Deco jewelry always turn up on the red carpet?
The glamour of platinum and diamonds is certainly one answer. But I can’t help but think the fearlessness rooted in its design is another. The jewelry created during this period, broadly defined as between the World Wars, is marked by its geometric lines and bold design, and its declaration of freedom from the overly romantic jewels that came before them. Gone were the flowers and garlands of the Belle Époque, replaced by the graphic lines and motifs of Art Deco.

Given the boldness of her performance in the movie, Art Deco inspired pieces—known for their irreverence—seem a perfect and meaningful choice.
Prior to the show, Mulligan revealed that tonight marks her first virtual red carpet. "I'm in London in a hotel, which is a very welcome break from being at home," she told E! News. "This is the first time I've worn heels in a good 18 months I think."
