It’s probably safe to assume that when Oscar-nominated actress and Promising Young Woman star Carey Mulligan decided to marry Mumford & Sons musician Marcus Mumford, she knew that impromptu musical serenades could be part of her future. But when Marcus momentarily took the lead during his wife’s recent Saturday Night Live hosting gig, he let the world know that not only does he adore his wife, but he also has some impressive comedic chops.

One thing’s for sure: these two are head over heels for each other. As rumor has it, the story of Carey and Marcus, who both grew up in religious households, dates back to their childhoods. Supposedly, at just 12 years old, they rendezvoused with fate by attending the same Christian church camp. The two were allegedly pen pals for some time before losing touch for several years.

Prior to their reunion, they each tried their hand at love by dating other people in their respective industries — Marcus dated singer Laura Marling and Carey was linked to Jake Gyllenhaal.

But according to Bustle, everything changed when Carey attended a Mumford & Sons house party with Jake in Nashville in February of 2011. There, Marcus and Carey hit it off and soon the two were seen hanging out around town. Less than a year after they officially began dating, the pair was married by Marcus’s parents in 2012 and settled down in Devon, England.

Carey's friend and fellow actress Sienna Miller revealed to Vogue that both Carey and Marcus come from "very solid families and have a real sense of the life they want to live."

"They have chickens and a dog, and roasts and friends, jams by campfires. It’s sort of idyllic. Marcus can headline Glastonbury and Carey can be nominated for however many Oscars, and then they come back to their farm, and they’re in big woolly jumpers and funny hats, raising piglets. It’s an amazing balance they’ve managed to strike," she gushed to the outlet.

In 2015, this talented couple added another chapter to their love story with the birth of their first child, a daughter named Evelyn. Two years later, the pair welcomed their second child, a son named Wilfred.

Today, Marcus and Carey prefer to stay out of the spotlight, though they have been spotted here and there. Apart from the occasional red carpet event, the two notably stepped out together at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The Great Gatsby star once told Vogue why she prefers to keep details about their marriage to herself: “Marcus is the only thing that’s mine that I can keep totally away, so I try to.”

To keep their relationship feeling like a fairytale, Carey and Marcus shared that they occasionally write love letters to each other. Carey once reportedly told The Telegraph, “I think they’re becoming a lost art form, which is very sad. To have a love letter from someone, to hold it in your hand and know that you can keep it for your whole life … well that’s an amazing thing.”

We love a story with a happy ending, and as you can see from their recent joint appearance on SNL, the two seem to have found just that.
