Having diabetes is more than dealing with an underlying health condition — it's a lifestyle. Not only is it crucial to eat well and exercise regularly, you also have to constantly stay on top of your ever-changing blood sugar.

"With diabetes management, knowledge is power when it comes to blood sugar," Dr. Disha Narang, an endocrinologist with Northwestern Medicine, tells Yahoo Life. "If you are more aware of what your blood sugars are, you have a great ability to do something about it."

Luckily, there are are options when it comes to testing your blood sugar. Some people prefer to wear a continuous glucose monitor, which constantly monitors your blood sugar through a sensor inserted under your skin, Narang says. But it's not for everyone and not all insurance plans cover it. So, some patients would rather do a finger stick test to keep tabs on their blood sugar.

Heads up: If you're in the finger stick camp, we have an exclusive code on a top-rated blood sugar testing kit. It's called the Care Touch Diabetes Testing Kit and it's massively popular — it has a 4.6 out of five-star rating and more than 17,000 glowing reviews. Right now, the kit is on sale for $31 (from $34), but when you use the exclusive code 15YAHOOCARE, the price drops to just $26.

When you have diabetes, your blood sugar is an important metric of how well your condition is being managed, Narang explains. It's important to keep your blood sugar levels within a target range as much as possible to lower the risk that you'll develop serious issues like heart disease, vision loss and kidney disease. And, on a more immediate level, keeping your blood sugar in your target range can help improve your energy levels and even your mood, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains.

When you monitor your blood sugar, "in real time, you can see what foods work and don’t work well for your diabetes and how good choices like exercise affect your levels," Dr. Rachael Oxman, an endocrinologist with Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, tells Yahoo Life. And, if you see that your blood sugar levels are consistently high, you can flag it to your doctor who can help determine next steps to get your condition under control, she says.

If you're on insulin, you'll need to test your blood sugars three to four times a day, Oxman says. "This is often necessary to choose the right dose for your insulin shots and to ensure your safety," she explains. "If you are on other diabetes medications and your diabetes control is generally good, you may only be asked to test once a day."

The kit is simple to use: You do a quick finger stick with the included lancet and dab it on a test strip. Insert it into the monitor and you'll get test results in as little as five seconds.

The monitor has a memory storage of up to 300 readings, along with a 14-day average, so you can track your progress. The entire kit has a blood glucose monitor, 100 blood test strips, one lancing device, 30 gauge lancets and a carrying case.

"The kit comes with absolutely everything you need and, for the price I bought it, I'm really surprised,"a five-star fan said. "It seems to be accurate which is the most important part. This was my first time buying a diabetes kit so I was worried I wouldn't know how to use it, but the box comes with easy to understand instructions."

A fellow fan called this testing kit "excellent and affordable," noting, "if I got a diabetes kit at CVS, it would have cost me well over $100 due to all the separate supplies needed." They continued, "this kit has everything you need and does the same exact thing as the ridiculously expensive ones in the store."

Again, you have options when it comes to monitoring your blood sugar at home. But if you prefer a finger stick test, this is definitely an option to consider.
