Cardinals GM Steve Keim gives lukewarm endorsement of Josh Rosen as team's starter

The Arizona Cardinals have the No. 1 pick in this year’s NFL draft.

The Cardinals’ new head coach, Kliff Kingsbury, said last year when he was still Texas Tech coach that he would choose Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray No. 1 overall if he could.

And the Arizona general manager gave a lukewarm answer when asked about the team’s current starting quarterback.

Steve Keim: ‘He is, for now’

For media members, this year’s NFL scouting combine kicked off in earnest on Wednesday morning, with coaches and general managers taking the podiums.

When it was Cardinals GM Steve Keim’s turn, he was of course asked about Josh Rosen, the quarterback Arizona chose in the first round last year and his future with the team.

“Is Josh Rosen our quarterback? Yeah, he is, right now, for sure,” Keim said.

Oh.

Keim’s words are less emphatic than Kingsbury’s recent statements on Rosen.

"Josh knows where he stands with us," he said on NFL Network. "They picked him top 10 for a reason. He knows it's a business and knows it's all part of the process. Tremendously talented thrower of the football. We want to build around him."

‘It’s still early’

Keim was also asked about the Cardinals’ interest in Murray, the Heisman Trophy winner, and whether the team might draft him.

Though the Cardinals have known for nearly two months that they have the top pick, Keim deflected.

“It’s still early in the process. We haven’t gone through our full evaluation at all the positions,” he said. “So it’s, again, too early to say.”
