'My car just sunk': Grandmother, grandson and friend barely escape sinkhole in Tennessee
A sinkhole dramatically swallowed up a vehicle in Jackson, Tenn., on Saturday, with the passengers just barely escaping. According to Gibson County Sheriff Paul Thomas, a grandmother, her grandson and another boy made it out of the car just before it sunk beneath the surface of Otha Holt Road.
“I’m just one of those people … I’m always thinking, what would I do if a situation happened?” driver Dinah Hufstedler told the Jackson Sun. “I’m an old woman and those ‘ifs’ have never happened, until today.”
Hufstedler was driving when she saw the road in front of her was covered in fast-moving water. Before she had the chance to back up, the road gave way and her front tires started to go down. “My car just sunk,” she told the news outlet.
The grandmother was able to roll down the windows, and all three climbed out and were able to get to solid ground without any injuries. Hufstedler said, “The pavement was halfway up the windows” by that point.
According to the news outlet, just moments after Hufstedler and the boys escaped, the sinkhole swallowed the vehicle. “Less than a minute after we got out, the car sunk up to the back seats,” Hufstedler said.
According to Thomas, the sinkhole was likely caused by recent heavy rains and flooding. He noted the road may be closed indefinitely.
