I Can't Stop Watching This Double Speedbump Launch Cars in the Air

Things that go bump in the night.

We can all bemoan poor road design when it comes to low bridges that attack passing trucks, or unnervingly narrow traffic measures. But, most of these destructive encounters with obstacles on the road are pretty avoidable incidents.

Such unfortunate encounters that leave destruction strewn across the road are pretty rare. Something that’s apparently a lot more common is drivers speeding across a pair of brutal double speed bumps in California.

Found in Fresno, California, these special speed humps comprise two 10-foot wide bumps that are each five inches high and separated by just 10 feet. For most drivers, easing off the gas and carefully driving over the humps grants them an easy passage. But not everyone drives like that, so a lot of people get caught out by the double bumps of doom.

In fact, it’s gotten so bad that residents local to the Fresno speed bumps have taken to filming some of the more embarrassing encounters drivers have with them. Thankfully, for anyone who enjoys watching a bit of automotive destruction, has spawned a YouTube channel and TikTok profile dedicated to the Fresno bumps.

We’ve been enthralled by these destructive traffic calming measures for some time now. So sit back, relax, and enjoy 16 drivers that probably wish they’d taken a different route to avoid these deadly double humps.

Bouncing Boxes

Speedbump fails 18

Let’s hope this box truck wasn’t packed to the gills with breakables! The long wheelbase shows off just what these bumps are capable of, with the second hump causing the rear end of the truck to bounce, bounce, bounce.

Trashing a Tesla

Speedbump fails 19

Some people who drive Tesla’s give the brand a bad rap for their devout following of Musk almighty and their belief that because they aren’t burning any gas, they can do whatever they like. This Tesla driver found out what happens when you follow those principles.

Smooth Sailing

Speedbump fails 20

Sometimes, with the right combination of speed, determination and suspension, you can achieve wonderful things. In this case, wonderful things is safely clearing a set of double speed bumps much faster than the law intended.

Easy Does it

Speedbumps Part 13

You’d have thought if you were driving a pickup with a trailer full of furniture at the back, you’d know to take it easy on the roads. But not this driver, they seem to think tackling the double speed humps head on is the only way to go. Cue a raft of rickety shelving wobbling as it bounces off the bumps.

PT Goes Where PT Wants

Speedbumps Part 14

The PT Cruiser, for one reason or another, is an icon of modern motoring. But even icons can come unstuck by closely-spaced double speed bumps.

Case in point, this gleaming silver example bounces over the first hump before launching into the air as it hits the second. There’s something quite majestic about a mid-flight PT Cruiser.

Change of Heart

Speedbump Fails 16

There’s been a change, yeah there’s been a change of heart. I said there’s been a change: you push just a little too far, you make it just a little too hard.

There’s been a change of heart.

Sparks Were Flying

First up, we’ve got an SUV massively misjudging its attempt to clear the speed bumps.

Sparks start to fly as soon as they skim the first one. Then, the nose of the car clanks down following a ride over the second. Not a nice way to drive around.

Opposites Attract

In another Speed Bump Olympics highlight video, we can see two polar opposite ways to clear the humps.

Where one driver takes it all nice and easy to come out unscathed, the second prefers to take a ‘bandaid ripping’ approach. Full speed ahead, maximum damage and pain for a short period of time. Which approach would you take?

Bouncing Buses

Think you’re safe because you’re on a bus that’s being driven by a consummate professional? Wrong.

Here, the passengers on this minibus were given a rough ride as the driver slams the brakes on before bumbling over the humps. Just another one of the many drivers caught out by the size and arrangement of these two humps.

I Fought the Bump and the Bump Won

Breakin’ shocks in the hot sun, I fought the bump and the bump won. I fought the bump and the bump won.

I need new wheels ‘cause I broke mine, I fought the bump and the bump won. I fought the bump and the bump won.

Slow and Steady

This channel doesn’t just do highlights videos, oh no. If you want, you can join them live on TikTok for some uninterrupted speed bump watching.

In this clip, one car shows us how it should be done. Well, it shows one driver take almost 30 seconds to cover 30 feet. I guess that’s something.

Another victim

Another day, another car incapable of safely traversing a pair of speed humps.

I wonder what went through the mind of this driver as they careered over the crest of the second bump? Whatever it was, it can’t have taken long for the thought to leave their head, as they quickly composed themselves and went on their way.

Synchronized Speed Bumps

You’ve heard of synchronized swimming; well, here’s something better and with less water.

May I present the inaugural Speed Bump Olympic synchronized speed hump competition. Isn’t it a majestic sight? I give them a four for complexity and a six for execution.

Big Car, Big Air

A bigger car gives you bigger suspension which means you can go fast over whatever you like, right?

Well, that’s what this driver thought before they were caught out and kicked into the air by the second Fresno speed hump.

I’m Like a Bird

Baby, all I need for you to know is: I’m like a bird, I’ll only fly away. I don’t know where my soul is, and I don’t know where my home is.

The Trucks Don’t Work

And finally, proof that pickups can’t conquer everything. They’re just as susceptible to the effects of a pair of notorious speed bumps as a bus, cop car or mid-size sedan.

Clearly, nothing is safe from these double humps of doom. The Fresno speed humps: the great equalizer of our time.
