Canada advances to Davis Cup semis with historic win over Australia
It’s been a banner year for Canadian tennis and the icing on the proverbial cake could be in store very soon.
Canada’s Denis Shapovalov and Vasek Pospisil defeated Australia’s John Peers and Jordan Thompson 6-3, 6-4 in the doubles match Tuesday, leading their country to a 2-1 series victory. It is the first time in 10 Davis Cup meetings that Canada has defeated Australia.

Pospisil previously defeated John Millman 7-6(7), 6-4, while Shapovalov lost to Alex de Minaur 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, setting up the tiebreak scenario in doubles.
Canada now awaits the winner of the Serbia-Russia quarter-final, which could lead to a tantalizing matchup between either Shapovalov or Pospisil against 16-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. The semifinal is scheduled for Saturday.
Entering the tournament as the 13th seed, Canada’s victory over Australia is the latest in a series of upsets, emerging from a group that boasted the sixth-ranked United States — who they were previously 0-15 against — and 10th-ranked Italy.
With Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime continuing to emerge as genuine stars on the ATP circuit and Bianca Andreescu looking like the future of women’s tennis, the biggest takeaway is that Canada is emerging as a true tennis superpower.
