Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes are back on, so what better time to reflect on their passionate romance?

The pair's relationship was, at first, professional, as they collaborated on music in 2014; but from there, their connection quickly grew into something more. In 2019, their relationship was confirmed, and after going strong for two years, the two split in November 2021. Following the breakup, the two remained close, and earlier this year rekindled their romance. On April 14, they made headlines with a buzzy reunion at Coachella Music Festival, and since then, seem to have picked up right where they left off.

Ahead, see the full progression of Mendes and Cabello's love story—from their first meeting on tour to their most recent PDA-filled outings.

May 24, 2023: They hold hands in NYC.

The pair step out for a date in New York City, where they are photographed hand-in-hand on a sweet stroll to a coffee shop.

April 14, 2023: They have a steamy reunion at Coachella.

The exes make headlines when they reunite at the 2023 Coachella Music and Arts Festival; there, they are captured on video sharing a passionate kiss and embrace while enjoying a performance.

The appearance also fuels fans’ theories that Cabello’s as-yet-unreleased song, “June Gloom," is about Mendes. “Are you coming to Coachella? / If you don’t, it’s whatever / If you do, honey, it’ll be all I think about,” she sings in a now-since-deleted Instagram post that teased part of the track.

March 2022: Camila talks about the split.

In an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Cabello expands on the reasoning behind their breakup. "My priorities have fluctuated and my focus has changed throughout my life," she says. "I feel like that was that way for both of us. Because we both started so young too, we're really learning how to be healthy adults. And that sometimes means not having your No. 1 focus be your career. And that's okay."

November 17, 2021: They announce their split.

In a joint statement shared to Cabello's Instagram Story, the pair reveal that they have officially called it quits.

"Hey guys, we've decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever," they say in the statement. "We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward."

Soon after, a source reveals to E! News that Mendes allegedly initiated the breakup conversation, but that while Cabello was "very upset over the split," the separation was still amicable.

November 28, 2020: Camila gushes over Shawn online.

Cabello dedicates a lengthy love note to Mendes on Instagram. "I've learned a lot about love with this guy," she writes in the caption. "It's not just the happy blissful moments you see in pictures and videos. When you're in a relationship with someone, it feels like they are this mirror reflecting yourself back to you."

November 24, 2019: They celebrate each other at the AMAs.

Cabello and Mendes give a steamy performance of their collaborated track "Señorita" at the American Music Awards, where they take home the award for Collaboration of the Year.

Later that evening, the pair share separate Instagram posts featuring heartfelt notes expressing their love and gratitude for each other.

"@amas thank you everyone thank you so much!❤️," Mendes writes on Instagram. "Also @camila_cabello i admire you so much you unbelievable human being thank you for being you❤️❤️ we love u guys.”

"I love u @shawnmendes thank u for being so there for me yesterday and every other day, u have the most caring and beautiful heart in the world," Cabello writes in her own post. "Thanks to all our fans for voting , we love and appreciate you guys so much and are so thankful for you❤️."

October 20, 2020: Shawn says Camila is his muse.

In the trailer for his Netflix documentary, Shawn Mendes: In Wonder, Mendes reveals that all of his songs have been inspired by Cabello. "My song comes on the radio or something, and I’m like, 'Everything’s about you. They’re all—they have always been about you,'" he says in a clip. "She goes, 'What do you mean?' Like, 'They’re all about you. Like every song I’ve ever wrote.'"

In the full documentary, which released on November 23, Mendes adds that his music still does not encompass the extent of his emotions for Cabello. "I don’t think I’ll be able to write songs that really do it justice, that can really capture the things and the feelings with her," he says. "It’s like, when you see a moon or stars, and you try to take a photo of it with your iPhone, and then you just can’t, it just doesn’t look good. And you’re like, 'It’s not supposed to be captured.' You know? It’s just supposed to be for us."

August 9, 2019: They go Instagram-official on Shawn's birthday.

For the first time since her confirmed romance with the singer, Cabello features Mendes on her Instagram in a heartfelt post marking his 21st birthday. "Happy birthday to this magic human," she writes in the caption, "I love you!!!!"

Earlier in the evening, she and Mendes are also photographed at the singer's birthday bash held at 1 Hotel in Brooklyn, New York.

July 4, 2019: They leave the friend zone.

The pair's romance is made unmistakable to the public on Fourth of July weekend, during which the two are seen holding hands for the first time in West Hollywood, California, and later while out partying together at Nobu in Malibu.

The following week, on July 13, the two are photographed locking lips at a cafe in San Francisco, where Cabello joins Mendes on a leg of his tour. And by the end of the month, the two make headlines when they are photographed sharing a passionate kiss in the ocean while on a trip to Miami.

In a July 12 conversation with Clash magazine, Cabello expresses her gratitude for the special connection she shares with Mendes. "I feel like it’s so rare to meet someone in this industry and find a person of that quality," she says, "and I feel like Shawn is that person for me."

June 21, 2019: They drop their hit single "Señorita."

The pair release their second hit single, "Señorita," which seems to allude to their budding romantic connection. "You say we're just friends / But friends don't know the way you taste / ‘Cause you know it's been a long time coming / Don’t you let me fall," they sing in the track.

Soon, on June 26, Us Weekly confirms that Cabello has split from boyfriend Matthew Hussey, further fueling rumors of a romance with Mendes.

April 5, 2018: Shawn calls Camila his "favorite person."

Mendes gushes over Cabello during a Beats 1 interview, saying that she is his "favorite person in the whole world."

Cabello later shares a link to the interview on Twitter and gushes about Mendes. "I shouldn’t be crying at this time in the morning but I AM," she writes. "I love you SO much."

November 20, 2015: They drop their first track.

The two release their first collaborated single, "I Know What You Did Last Summer." The hit track marks Cabello's first as a solo artist after leaving Fifth Harmony, and spurs the pair's first major wave of dating rumors.

Days later, in a joint appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Cabello and Mendes answer fans' questions on Twitter, including one about the current status of their relationship. "There is no way you haven't made out," Corden flat-out tells the pair. "We really haven't," Cabello insists, to which Corden says he still does not believe Mendes "has never leaned in."

"That is never going to happen," Mendes assures Corden, though soon after suggests the reason is because he is friend-zoned "every time I try to make a move."

Years later, in a November 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Cabello admitted that the collaboration with Mendes was the first time she felt "really bonded with him as more than a friend."

"I think he did too, but we were both really young," she added, "and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don’t think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren’t together. It was just weird."

July 2014: They meet.

Cabello, then still part of Fifth Harmony, and Mendes, an emerging talent from Vine, meet for the first time while on tour with Austin Mahone as opening performers.

In a joint interview with V Magazine years later, in June 2019, Cabello expressed her initial positive impression of Mendes, telling him, "I remember I wanted to hang out with you, but you were always on the tour bus, just learning guitar."
