Call of Duty leaks suggest next game will in a popular alternate history timeline: ‘Always an incredibly fun setting’

The latest batch of Call of Duty leaks suggests that this year’s game could take place in an alternate history of World War II.

According to prominent Call of Duty enthusiast and leaker ModernWarzone, the 2021 Call of Duty game is reportedly called Vanguard. It’s unclear if Vanguard is a project name or a working title, but what ModernWarzone is certain of is that Vanguard takes place in an alternate history where World War II continued beyond 1945, as reported by GamesRadar.

“This is gonna take place in the 50s, more than five years after [the war],” ModernWarzone said in his video. “I can’t tell you when the game starts and when it ends but I do know that it is after the real-life events of World War II in parts. But the game is going to still have World War II going [on].”

If ModernWarzone’s sources are correct, then this is both old and new territory for the Call of Duty franchise. Technically, all of the Call of Duty games take place in alternate universes with fictional characters. But some titles have been more speculative than others, such as Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Call of Duty: Infinite.

World War II in particular has long been a popular setting for alternate or divergent timelines. Amazon’s TV series, The Man in the High Castle comes to mind, as the show depicts a future where the Axis powers won the war and thus jointly control most of the United States.

On Reddit, users discussed the many directions that Vanguard could go in and their thoughts about the rumors.

“Alternate history is always an incredibly fun setting, so long as they don’t take it too seriously and lean into the camp,” one user wrote.

Another Redditor pointed out that the initial rumors could’ve been sensationalized, offering a more grounded take.

“It seems more likely that it could just be a game where we have a few levels at the end of WW2 and it then continues into the Korean war or something,” the user wrote.

“So, Wolfenstein?” another Redditor asked, referencing another classic first-person shooter series set in an alternate future where the Nazis won World War II.

Regardless of what Call of Duty Vanguard (if that is even the name) may or may not look like, Activision confirmed that a new Call of Duty game will be coming in late 2021. The leaks also suggested that the title will be developed by Sledgehammer Games.
