A Bunch of Models Just Wore These Katie Holmes-Approved Sneakers on the NYFW Runway

One unfortunate trope of fashion week is a woman in ankle-breakingly high heels taking a headline-grabbing topple mid-stride down the runway. Even the slightest leg quiver from an on-duty model can make an entire audience flinch, and no one knows that better than Carrie Bradshaw.

But Collina Strada’s fall ’20 show, which took place in lower Manhattan this past Sunday, refused to tempt fate. Alongside a collection of explosively patterned apparel, models jogged, skipped, pranced, and, yes, rode one another horseback down a real-grass runway in famously comfortable Hoka One One sneakers.

The sneaker’s supportive design brought out the most from energized models, who forewent the typical runway strut for exaggerated stomping, twirls, and high kicks that showed off the shoe’s do-anything-ness. The custom Hokas were dyed and panelled in landfill-salvaged fabrics and rose silk to match the garments — one chunky black pair featured fresh-looking neon green spray paint lines, while another was executed in rich topaz satin.

This was the second season in a row that designer Hillary Taymour of Collina Strada tapped Hoka for her show; the shoes were equally embellished when she sent them down the plein air runway in August of last year. Given the two brands’ stances on sustainable design, we find the pairing perfectly suited.

We already knew the sneaker brand was chic — Katie Holmes and Reese Witherspoon taught us that — and we’ve covered shoppers’ love for the comfy shoes extensively, but the fact that it’s become a go-to runway choice is so major. Aside from Collina Strada, upstart label PH5 dressed its zig zag-hemmed and puffer-cardigan-clad models in colorful high-top Hokas at its apres ski-themed presentation this season, and early last year, it was New York darling Sandy Liang who suited her models in the brand’s sneakers.

We’re still waiting to get our hands on a pair of those custom treads from the Collina Strada runway, but in the meantime, we’re shopping the shoes on every up-and-coming designer’s radar at Nordstrom and Zappos. Shop Hoka One Ones below.
