  • LEGO and Ferrari worked together to recreate the limited-edition Daytona SP3.

  • The LEGO model includes a functioning eight-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifter.

  • Part of the LEGO Technic Ultimate Car Concept series, the model is 23 inches long and 5.5 inches high.

Even at a one-eighth scale, the intricacies of a LEGO Ferrari supercar build are highly recognizable (the signature Ferrari red does help with that). The toymaker partnered with the Italian car manufacturer to craft the new LEGO Technic Ferrari Daytona SP3, a 3,778-piece, 1:8 scale model of the supercar.

Part of the recently-created LEGO Technic Ultimate Car Concept series—the fourth in the line—the LEGO set is available only from LEGO stores from the June 1 release until August 1. After that, other global retailers will sell the limited-edition set. The model car measures 5.5 inches high, 23 inches long, and 9.5 inches wide when fully built and retails for $400.

“No detail has been overlooked in the design and as someone with an engineering background myself, I’m blown away by the attention to detail and precision of the model at such a small scale,” Niels Christiansen, LEGO Group CEO, says in a news release. “We’re incredibly lucky to be able to partner with Ferrari to help fans turn their dreams into a reality.”

The new model includes a functioning eight-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifter, a V12 engine with moving pistons, and silver-lacquered rims. The “traffic-stopping red model” includes one of the more complex exterior builds in the LEGO series, revealing working butterfly doors and an interior with a recreated cockpit, down to the prancing horse logo resplendent on the steering wheel.

Ferrari announced the real-life version in late 2021, and is inspired by the prototype racers that won the 1967 Daytona 24 Hours. Expect around 600 of the special-edition cars to be created in 2022 for a very special-edition price tag, all with a mix of old-school design and modern flair.

But this isn’t the first supercar to get the elaborate treatment of a Technic set. Already we’ve seen LEGO unveil three other fantastical sets—a Lamborghini, a Porsche, and a Bugatti—focused on the Ultimate Car Concept, along with a handful of less-involved designs of classic and notable cars.

Here’s a glimpse at some of the best vehicle concepts available via LEGO:

-Technic Lamborghini Sián FKP 37: With nearly 3,700 pieces, the Lamborghini also has a V12 engine with movable pistons and a working eight-speed gearbox. The spoiler adjusts for performance and this lime green replica includes scissor opening doors.

-Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS: The glove compartment on the Porsche shows off a unique serial number to go along with a highly detailed dashboard, working gearbox, racing seats, a flat-six engine with moving pistons, true-to-life orange body work, red suspension springs, headlights and taillights, and low-profile tires in a 2,700-piece model.

-Technic Bugatti Chiron: The 3,600-piece Bugatti allows owners to switch the active rear wing from handling to top-speed position. The build instructions mirror the way a real Bugatti is constructed, and the model includes a W16 engine, authentic cockpit, unique serial number, and even a Bugatti overnight bag in the storage compartment.

-Technic McLren Formula 1 Race Car: Launched in February, the design mimics the 2021 F1 season’s livery and a model of the V6 cylinder engine, suspension, and differential. This was the first LEGO Technic version of an F1 car. At 1,432 pieces, it has similar measurements to the Ferrari, but a less involved build.

-Technic BMW M 1000 RR: Want to slide out of the cockpit and onto a bike? The December 2021 release of the BMW motorbike offers you a chance, with a 1:5 scale replica that features a functioning three-speed gearbox, front and rear suspension, front steering, a gold chain, three screen dashboard options, and a printed windshield. The motorbike is 1,920 pieces.

-Assorted options: For those looking for something a little simpler, check out the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, Land Rover Defender, Ferrari 488 GTE, Back to the Future Time Machine, Formula E Porsche 99X Electric, Volkswagen T2 Camper Van, Fiat 500, Ford F-150 Raptor, or even the Vespa 125.
